Pushing the e pawn opens both the queen and the bishop diagonals, for more immediate attacking potential, but the e pawn is not itself defended.
Pushing the d pawn only opens one diagonal move, but the pawn is defended from behind by the queen.
So we can say that pushing the e pawn is more likely to lead to sharp tactical play, while pushing the d pawn is more conducive to positional play. These are big generalisations though, both pawns have all possibilities.
