Chess24 has disappeared.

They might not want to, since they already have launched "cold war" will Lichess.
But again, they might want to, since I think they consider Lichess as their enemy of some sort, cuz im pretty sure they ban people for saying lichess or maybe praising lichess in THEIR forums
Lichess and chess.com are not in the same "market".

Lichess is a non-profit organization aiming to promote chess and provide a free platform to enjoy this game.

Chess.com is a business organization with profit being the highest the goal.

Lichess.com cannot be bought, because nobody is going to sell it. And while it may have tremendous value, incorporating it into a profitable business will be quite a stretch.

Technically Chess.com could be bought, but the only reason lichess could consider this is to merge it into its non-profit structure. So it would take lots of donations to then basically turn it upside down.

Be happy about competition, it gives people choices and drives the motivation to make things better.

Even in 3024 this site will be remained free for all with more stronger tools, AI and main earning resource for coaches and players. Thank you Thibault for your unprecedented invention. And thank you Lichess for providing every acess to freebies.

Assuming humanity still exists in 3024 (which I find highly doubtful).

Humans would exist, but humanity inside them won't exist lol
I only played a handful of games there. I never liked the pieces and boards. I have, however, watched a lot of their content. I used to like the format of "banter blitz" and I remain a fan of Peter Svidler and Anna Rudolf as amiable personalities. Their coverage of the World Championships with Gustaffson and Svidler were the best around at one time.

Chess.com have harmed the world of chess by buying out and shutting down Chess24. If they could wrest the moopoly for online chess they'd do more harm. You can imagine them setting a daily limit of free games for every non paying user, for example.

Lichess is more important than ever.
It seems Magnus‘ company Playmagnus and chess24 have merged first:
web.archive.org/web/20231202105749/https://chess24.com/en/read/news/chess24-and-play-magnus-join-forces (Article published May 15th, 2019)

and later Playmagnus has been bought by chess.com:
web.archive.org/web/20230406013800/https://chess24.com/en/read/news/play-magnus-group-receives-chess-com-offer (August 24th, 2022)
www.chess.com/news/view/chesscom-acquires-pmg (December 21st, 2022)

And now apparently the site chess24.com has now been permanently turned off.
We are building now another chess platform with a group of enthusiasts, what did you like the most in chess24 so we can bring it back to life?
