First of, an acronym is a short form a word derived by taking the first letter of each word (eg. FIFA). Soccer is not an acronym. As for your point that association is right there, association shows up in a lot of places. Should I start referring the Association of Computing Machinery as soccer. Association is right there.

You can argue with natural etymology all you want, but the most 'logical' terminology isn't what usually fills the lexicon

But honestly the only reason I said it, is because it usually sends someone on a long emotionally charged rant about a meaningless difference in words lol
